With the COVID-19 pandemic, we are all concerned about cross-contamination. This page is designed to share information about working with protection. We will be updating this page with any new information we discover.

Our recommendations are listed below, starting with the most protective.

1. Use a face shield
– Purchase our customized loupe shield. It has been custom-designed to work with loupes. Click the picture to view in-use examples of loupe and light combinations.

  • Compatible with all SurgiTel products
  • Good eye protection
  • Multiple light mounting options
  • The vertical slot is pre-scored for a removable option
  • Good viewing angle resulting in NO neck pain
  • Loupes and mask are not easily contaminated
  • Results in no frequent changes in mask
  • Results in no frequent disinfecting of loupes
  • Anti-fog and static-free
  • Latex-free, fiberglass free, distortion-free
  • Foam headband relieves pressure
  • Lightweight, optically clear
  • Face shield sent with protective film

Contact your local representative to order

Or order a generic face shield from Amazon or Walmart. Look for an option with a hole for your LED if needed. If you cannot find this option, you may cut out a hole for the light to protrude. Look for something with protection from above. Also look for something that will push the shield away from the face, to allow space for your loupes. You may also contact your local representative to order a light adaptor which may clip to your face shield. Contact us here.

2. Use a face mask:
– N95 (US standard), KN95 (China standard), KF94 (Korea standard), FFPE (EU standard, including UK), and disposable).
– If your loupes are raised by placing on top of face shields, separate nose pads to lower loupes. Video link.
– Order from Amazon or Walmart.

3. Disinfect your loupes and headlights regularly.
– We recommend SciCan Optim disinfectant which was tested to be safe with both loupes and headlights. Link to instructions

4. If your loupes are SurgiTel Titanium frames, use the side shields included with your purchase.
– Contact us if you need replacements at support@surgitel.com
 – Use wrap-around frames such as Oakley eye protection frames (Radar and Flak) and SurgiTel eye protection frames (Prime and Prime EX) do not require side shields (OSHA/ANSI compliant).

5. As an added protection, use surgical caps which cover the top of frames
– Order from Amazon.

6. If you or a team member are not wearing loupes, consider ordering eyeglass frames with clear lenses with side shields.
– To purchase from SurgiTel, contact your local SurgiTel representative. Contact us here.

7. Other suggestions:
– If your loupes are FLM (front-lens-mounted). Nose pads can be placed on face masks for extra seal.
– If your loupes are TTL (through-the-lens), nose pads should be placed on your nose (not face masks)
– Maintain maximum working distance at the furthest points of your visual depth of field

8. Feel free to contact us directly for more information on the below or any other loupe questions you have at this time. Contact us at support@surgitel.com

LOUPE FAQs

Most clinicians use TTL loupes today. There are several reasons. First, TTL loupes have been promoted by all major manufacturers of loupes because technologies for lightweight stable FLM loupes are not available to them. Zeiss has been offering stable FLM loupes, but they are very heady. Second, most FLM loupes sold worldwide are made in China. Since they are very poor quality, FLM loupes have been associated with poor quality and heavy. There may be other reasons. But SurgiTel FLM loupes have several advantages over TTL loupes and other brand FLM loupes. SurgiTel FLM loupes, which are made using advanced designs and assembly technologies (patented), are lightweight and easy to be adjusted for the best vision and ergonomics. Then who may want SurgiTel FLM loupes? The first group is clinicians who want to have direct vision when they do not use loupes by flipping up loupes. The second group is clinicians who are having a peripheral vision problem because loupe optics (called oculars) are too close to eyes. The third group is clinicians whose eyeglass prescriptions are frequently updated due to aging. For prescription update, TTL loupes have to be returned to manufacturers, but FLM loupes can be updated by local optical shops, saving time and updating expense.

Please see the cleaning instructions on the Manuals and Instructions webpage.

That depends. If you are a first-time loupe user we generally recommend a 2.5 times magnification. This will provide you a good balance between magnification and width of your field size. If you are an experienced user, the magnification increase that you want is whichever would make your procedures easier. To try out some different magnifications where you work, schedule a demo or an appointment by clicking the buttons to the left.

Patented working distance caps for SurgiTel loupes are used on both Galilean Prism (or Keplerian) loupes. The first use is to compensate for the working distance change due to the age-related presbyopia. The second use is to create different working distances for different procedures. The third use is to increase the resolution power of loupes by decreasing the working distance. The same pair of loupes can be used for multi-resolution loupes. By shortening the working distance by 20%, we can see single-dimensional object by 20% better,  two-dimensional objects by 44% better, and three-dimensional objects) by 72% better. If you interested in learning about the distance effect on the resolution, click for September of 2016 EPN

No problem, we’ll get your prescription during your office fitting. For flip-up type mounting, we will put prescription lenses in your Titanium or Oakley frames when we build them. For through-the-lens mounting, the first lens of the ocular will have your prescription built right in.

Without getting too technical, a prism lens is different from a Galilean lens in that it adds a miniature prism inside the telescope ocular. This allows you to obtain a bigger field size even at the higher magnification levels. Although traditional prism telescopes would be much heavier, our patented Compact-Prism design delivers very high magnification without adding on a whole lot of weight!

Even with perfect eyesight, you are missing lots of detail without magnification. Bending over to see better is not a solution! Your upper/lower back and your neck are significantly strained by this bad posture. With our light, high powered, wide view loupes you can both see and feel better.

HEADLIGHT FAQs

With an overhead light you’re bound to get a lot of shadows cast from your hands and tools. With a headlight attached to your loupes, in what is called a co-axial alignment, any shadows are directly opposite your eye so everything you see is lit!

Just making your light brighter doesn’t mean you see better. In fact, if the light is too bright it will “wash out” details making your work harder! True clarity comes from the right brightness, contrast, glare reduction and also color rendering. Our lights have adjustable brightness, our lens coatings control glare reduction and we have different color temperature lights and optional color-contrasting filters. Click “Request an Appointment” and your local representative can customize a system ideal for your work.

SurgiTel has multiple types of filters that can cut glare and limit residual light from outside of your working area. Each can be customized to your work environment.

SurgiTel LED systems use lithium-ion battery technology, the same type that is in your mobile phone. Our corded LED battery packs are designed to last all day (7-8 hours) on full intensity. So if you remember to charge them at night, you’ll always be ready for the next day! Even if you do forgot, you can run your LED headlight while it charges.

Our batteries run for 800 to 1000 cycles, which is about 3 to 5 years depending on usage level. An indicator your battery cell needs to be replaced is if the battery runs far less than the designated period. In this case, the battery pack is designed to be opened so you can easily replace the battery cell. New battery cells are available from SurgiTel Customer Service at support@surgitel.com .

Absolutely. We manufacture our fiber optic headlights with whatever connection you need. We keep connections for all the major brand light source connection ports: ACMI, Olympus, Storz, and Wolf.

EYE PROTECTION FAQs

Yes. SurgiTel has designed a system that allows complete integration of laser filters, x-ray filters, loupes and even headlights.

No. If your procedures emit damaging light or radiation we can also build protection into frames without magnification. You do not need those odd-looking, uncomfortable goggles to be safe! Click “Request an Appointment” at the left and try on our Titanium and Oakley frames that will also protect your eyes.

VIDEO CAMERA FAQs

Our digital video camera is loupe mounted, meaning the camera sees where you see. The camera can even magnify at 2x, 3x and even 5x to show the detail of what you’re seeing. Simply put, SurgiCam is the closest thing to recording from your eyes!
